STATESBORO — The Georgia Southern baseball team (2-9, 0-0 SBC) took the series win over USC Upstate (7-6, 0-0 Big South) with a 9-8 comeback win on Sunday afternoon (March 1st).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Spartans struck first now in all three contests as after a hit batter, Upstate's Tyler Lang sliced a home run that just squeaked over the left line wall for the visitors to take a 2-0 lead.
In the Eagles' second, they would halve the deficit with back-to-back doubles from Sean White and Bryson Trammel, with Trammell getting his third RBI of the season.
USC Upstate responded with two additional runs of their own by a three-single inning and smart baserunning to score before the final out was recorded in a pickle.
The Eagles would spark a two-out rally with consecutive base hits in the third, but would strand two after flying out to end the frame.
Upstate loaded the bases with none away to start the fifth, and a run would be walked home to keep the bases juiced.
The next batter, Will Robbins would enter and immediately force a double play at the plate for a crucial first two outs. The next batter, Wylie Waters, delivered a two-RBI single for the Spartans to make it 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, a White RBI-single followed by Trammell's second double of the day that scored another two would cut the deficit to just three midway home.
The following half-inning, back-to-back hit batters would put two on for Upstate, but a double play and looking strikeout got Robbins and the Eagles out of a jam without conceding any runs.
It would become a 7-5 game after an errant throw on a double play attempt scored Senese, who reached to start the frame after a dropped third strike that went to the backstop.
In the Eagle eighth, four straight batters would reach aboard via two walks and a John Davis single before Jack Myers slapped a grounder that would hit McCoy on the throw to second, keeping everyone safe and scoring one.
Two batters later, Trammell would deliver again with his fourth double of the afternoon down the right field line, clearing the bases and giving Southern the 9-8 advantage.
The Spartans caused a scare in the ninth, as runners were on the corners with two away thanks to a Clayton Campidilli single. However, a groundout to shortstop would seal the series win for the Eagles.

NOTES:

Brsyon Trammell set a school record with his four double afternoon, finishing with six RBIs. It would be the most RBIs for an Eagle since now graduate assistant Sam Blancato did it two years ago to the day against Jacksonville in 2024.
After trailing 7-1 in the fifth, it was the largest comeback win for Southern since being down 6-0 after the opening two innings against Georgia State on April 16th, 2022.
Along with his two base knocks, McCoy reached aboard in all five of his ABs on the day. He's reached first safely in his last nine plate appearances, with all but one of his 14 plate appearances on the series ending with him standing on the bags.
Alex Mason earned his first career win on the mound after navigating two full, pressure-filled innings without conceding a run. In his seven batters faced, he would allow just one hit while striking out two Spartans.

The Eagles travel to Charleston for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, March 4th, to take on The Citadel for their first road midweek of 2026. First pitch is set for 6 PM in the Palmetto State.
