Former Eagle Michael Curry Named Head Coach at Florida Atlantic

Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame member earns his first Division I head coaching job

STATESBORO, GA. â€“ With the titles NBA Head Coach, NBPA President, NBA Team Captain, and Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame already on Michael Curry's resume, the former Eagle added a new position when he was named head coach at Florida Atlantic on Monday evening.

Curry brings to FAU more than 20 years of basketball experience as a coach, player and front-office executive. Most recently, he served as associate head coach (2010-13) for the Philadelphia 76ers, where he was part of Doug Collins' staff. Curry, who carved his NBA playing niche on a Collins-coached Pistons team (1993-94), focused his attention on the team's defense which was critical in the 76ers' 2011-12 playoff run to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Prior to Philadelphia, Curry served as the Pistons' head coach in 2008-09 following one season as a Detroit assistant. He joined the Pistons organization after a two-year stint at the NBA league office, where he served as vice president of player development for the NBA Development League and later as vice president of basketball operations. He is also a former president and vice president of the National Basketball Players Association's Executive Board.

Curry's career on the Association's hardwood included stops with the Indiana Pacers (2004-05), Toronto Raptors (2003-04), Detroit Pistons (1996-97, 1999-2003), Milwaukee Bucks (1997-99), Washington Bullets (1996-97), Philadelphia 76ers (1993), and Sacramento Kings (1992).

At Georgia Southern, Curry scored 1,211 career points in his four year career with the Eagles. As a senior, he led the 1989-90 Eagles in scoring (16.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg). He also helped the program to three-straight postseason appearances with trips to the 1987 NCAA Tournament, 1988 NIT, and 1989 NIT.

In 2001, Curry was named to the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame and he earned the University's Alumni of the Year Award in 2005. Georgia Southern Athletics retired his number in 2006.

Curry's daughter, Crysten is completing her sophomore season at Georgia Southern playing for the volleyball team. Michael and his wife Katrina have two sons who played college sports. Michael played basketball at Morehouse College and Deon played football at Michigan State.
