McCall Closes the Door as Eagles Complete Sweep

Box Score  | Hennon Interview

STATESBORO, Ga. - Matt McCall got a game-ending double play as the Georgia Southern Eagles held on to complete the four-game sweep of Holy Cross with a 9-8 victory on Sunday at J.I. Clements Stadium.

Stryker Brown hit two home runs and Aaron Mizell added a two-run shot in the fourth inning to help Georgia Southern (14-2) take an early 7-2 lead.

"Stryker got in some good counts today and got some good pitches to hit. He was able to ride a couple out of here," Head Coach Rodney Hennon said. "Those were big hits for us."

Holy Cross (3-9) pulled within a run late in the ball game, scoring five runs over the final three frames.

McCall, who left a runner stranded at second base after entering in the eighth inning, had the go ahead run on base after Jack St. Clair's RBI single in the ninth inning. McCall (4) erased St. Clair and ended the game with a double play from Connor Perry.

The save ensured Will Middour his first victory of the season. Middour (1-0) held the Crusaders to three runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. The junior right-hander did not allow more than one hit in an inning and exited after St. Clair's two-out single in the sixth inning.

"I thought Will did a nice job. He was a lot sharper today than he was in his first outing. He gave us a strong effort. We got some big hits to get him the lead. He did a nice job pitching with the lead," Hennon said.

The Eagles finished with their 12th game of 10+ hits this season. Brown and Mizell led the charge with three hits each. Brown also plated three runs, all coming on his two long balls. Evan Ocello, who homered in the fourth inning, and St. Clair led Holy Cross with two hits each.

Donny Murray allowed just one run over the first two frames but ran into trouble in the third inning. Murray (1-2) took the loss after allowing three two-out hits and a two-run homer to Brown.

The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Brandon Cipolla poked a single over the head of a diving Dalton Busby to score a lead off hit batter in Nick Lovullo.

Brown quickly tied the game with his first homer of the day in the second inning.

Ryan Cleveland produced the go ahead run in the third inning with a two-out single.

Baseball remains at home in the mid-week and will face North Florida at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. It will be Beach Day at the ballpark and the best dressed "beach themed" fan will win a prize. The contest against the Ospreys will also be the first opportunity for fans to play baseball bingo.
