First-Inning Error Helps Wildcats Top Eagles

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. - A five-run first inning lifts the Davidson Wildcats to a 5-2 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles in the Southern Conference series opener at Wilson Field.

An error by the third baseman Garrett Chapman extended the bottom of the first for Davidson (15-7, 6-1), who went on to score five unearned runs in the frame on four hits. Lee Miller capped off the inning with a two-RBI single to right field.

Sam Foy got the scoring started in the first with a two-out single to left field. Nathan Becker plated the second run with a base hit back up the middle, and Ben Arkin doubled to left center to make it 3-0.

Georgia Southern (19-8, 3-4) was unable to overcome the early deficit and scored two runs on sacrifice flies from Ben Morgan and Aaron Mizell. The Eagles finished with six hits, four of which came from the bottom third of the batting order. Aaron Palmer led the squad with two hits, a walk and a stolen base.

The win snapped a 16-game series win streak for the Eagles over the Wildcats and was the first for Davidson over GSU since 2008.

Rob Bain allowed both Eagle runs but picked up the win in a quality start. Bain tossed 6.1 innings and struck out five batters to improve to 2-1 on the year.

Bain allowed a one-out single to Garrett Chapman in the seventh before being replaced by Ryan Lowe. Lowe allowed a double to Kody Adams and a free pass to Palmer to load the bases. Morgan got one run in with a sac fly, but Lowe coaxed Chase Griffin to foul out to end the threat.

Michael Goldberg faced the minimum in the ninth inning and struck out a pair for his fourth save of the season.

Outside of the first inning, Sam Howard allowed just four hits and one walk. Howard (3-3) pitched into the sixth inning and left with two outs and a pair of runners on base. The junior righthander struck out five batters and allowed five runs – none earned – over 5.2 innings.

Matt McCall struck out Andrew Pope to end the sixth inning. McCall and Richman combined to hold the Wildcats scoreless over the final 2.1 innings.

The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. first pitch. Josh Wirsu is schedule to make the start for the Eagles. The Wildcats will counter with Danny Mooney.
