Bakker's Complete Game Helps Elon to Series Opening Win

Box Score ELON, N.C. - Lucas Bakker tossed a two-hit complete game to help Elon to a 1-0 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles in a pitchers' duel at Latham Park.

Sebastian Gomez dropped a ball in front of centerfielder Josh Black to score Casey Jones, who singled and stole second base with two outs, for Elon's (12-6, 1-0) lone run in the sixth inning.

Bakker held Georgia Southern (15-3, 0-1) hitless through 6.2 innings before allowing a single to Chase Griffin in the seventh inning. The Eagles drew two walks to load the bases with two outs, but Bakker struck out Garrett Chapman to end the threat.

The reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week, Bakker (3-1) struck out two batters around a Ben Morgan base hit in the eighth inning and punched out two more in the ninth for his second complete game of the season.

Sam Howard kept the Phoenix off the scoreboard for five inning and stranded three runners in scoring position over the first four frames. Howard (3-2) struck out eight batters and walked one but took the loss. The junior righthander allowed just the one run and four hits over seven innings.

Matt McCall left a lead off walk at second base after recording a ground out in the eighth inning to keep the deficit at one run.

Jones tallied two of the Elon's four hits and stole a pair of bases.

Ryan Cleveland walked twice. Cleveland extended his reached base streak to 17 games after leading off the fifth inning with a free pass.

The contest was the Southern Conference opener for both squads.

The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Sunday's contest was moved to Saturday due to expected inclement weather. Josh Wirsu will get the start in the first game, with Will Middour on the mound in game two.

Notes: Georgia Southern dropped just their third contest of the season. Elon won their fourth-straight game against the Eagles and improved to 22-18 in the all-time series... GSU was held to a season-low two hits... The Eagles snapped an eight-game stolen base streak... After striking out just three times against North Florida, GSU punched  out seven times... The Eagle pitching staff held an opponent to three earned runs or less for the sixth-straight contest... GSU walked just two batters, their sixth contest with three or less walks... The pitching staff did not allow an extra-base hit for the first time in the last three contests... Ryan Cleveland extended his reached base streak to 17 games with two walks... Stryker Brown also walked and extended his reached base streak to 16 games.
