STATESBORO, Ga. – Kassidy Blevins scored a career-high 21 points in the first half, and Samford held Georgia Southern to 25 percent shooting from the floor for the game to post a 58-43 Southern Conference women's basketball victory over the Eagles Saturday evening in Hanner Fieldhouse.
MiMi DuBose led Georgia Southern (7-14, 5-5) with 14 points to go along with two assists, and
Anna Claire Knight tallied 10 points and six rebounds.
Briana Jones finished with nine points, four boards and two blocked shots, and
Danielle Spencer chipped in six points and seven rebounds.
Blevins was 8-of-9 from the field and 5-for-6 from 3-point range in the first half. The Eagles held the freshman scoreless in the second stanza, but her first-period output helped Samford (6-15, 4-6) build a 34-19 cushion at the break.
Clara Young provided the second half spark, scoring 14 points and finishing the contest with 16. Christy Robinson recorded 11 points and five rebounds.
Both teams struggled from the field early, and Blevins' first triple of the game tied the score 9-9 midway through the first half. Samford turned it on from there as Blevins scored eight points in an 11-3 run that opened 20-12 lead.
The Eagles trimmed the margin to 23-19 on a Knight free throw with 3:06 to go, but Blevins got loose for seven more points as Samford scored the final 11 of the period.
"We had several possessions late in the first half where we missed an assignment, and gave them - Blevins in particular - too much of a cushion," said Georgia Southern coach
Chris Vozab. "They are good shooters when they are contested, and they are great shooters when they are uncontested."
The margin grew to as many as 19 points on Young's triple from the baseline with four minutes to go in the contest. Georgia Southern used a full-court press to generate three straight Bulldog turnovers and cut the lead to 12 points with 2:29 remaining, but that was as close as the Eagles would get.
Georgia Southern tightened up its defense in the second half, holding Samford to 29 percent shooting, but the Eagles shot just 27 percent in the frame, including 1-for-7 from 3-point range.
"They did a good job of jamming our cutters and not allowing us to get deep inside position," said Vozab. "We struggled to get the ball into the paint, whether it was on the pass with an angle to our post players or through dribble penetration. They did a good job of sending us East-West, and there were times when we didn't make great decisions and forced a couple things."
Georgia Southern returns to action in Hanner Fieldhouse Monday at 7 p.m. as they take on SoCon leader Chattanooga. The Lady Mocs have won 29 straight against SoCon competition.
It's a #TrueBlue Out, and all fans are encouraged to wear blue to support the Eagles. The first 100 students through the door will get Hanner Hooligan t-shirts.
