Day Two At Wofford Invitational Abbreviated Due To Rain
TOURNAMENT BRACKETS
Spartanburg, Sc. – Mother Nature showed up to compete today at the Wofford Invitational, as a weather system forced the start of day two matches to 3 p.m. The tournament was abbreviated and no singles matches were played on day two.
The unforeseen weather conditions could not ground the Eagles, however, as they picked up several key victories in doubles play.
Anne Kurzweil and Mary Phillips Smith combined to win the "Gold Doubles" championship, which featured the strongest players in the tournament field. In the semi-finals, the duo battled the tandem of Karas/Reid of host Wofford College and won 8-6, despite getting off to a slow start.
"Kurzweil and Smith were unable to find their opponents weakness early on, but manged to turn it around after being down 5-1," said Head Coach Michele Stanford. "They were able to play very aggressive which resulted in a 7 game winning streak. They did a great job moving forward in to the court, and they carried their aggressive play into their final match."
The championship match saw Kurzweil/Smith challenge University of North Carolina Asheville's McCall/Rivero and win 8-5.
In the "Black Doubles" bracket, Daria Vasekina and Francisca Norregaard competed against USC's Ruppert/Roell in the back-draw bracket and won 8-3. They followed it up with a hard-luck loss to UNC-A's Boissevain/Brooker 1-8. Stanford commented, "In their first match, Nooregaard and Vasekina were able to use their aggressive shots at the baseline to set up their partner at the net. They had great placement on their shots and never gave their opponents a chance to get comfortable. In their second match, they suffered from a slow start, and were not able to be as aggressive due to some inconsistencies at the baseline."
Jordana Klein paired with Lauren Mueller in the "Gray Doubles" bracket and battled Western Carolina's McLinden/Mesalles in the semi-finals. They were setback 4-8, but rebounded with a 8-7(5) tiebreak victory over Wofford College's Erickson/Graham to finish in 3rd place.
"Klein and Mueller had a tough loss in the semifinals, but they were able to turn it around for their second match. While competing for third place, they brought a lot of energy to the court. They did a great job setting each other up at the net and attacking the other team's net player. As soon as their opponent was out of position, they would move forward and finish the point off."
The Eagles will conclude the rain-shortened Wofford Invitational Sunday morning with singles play.
