
Cross Country Returns to South Carolina Friday

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern cross country team returns to the state of South Carolina for the third time this season. The Eagles previously raced in Columbia, S.C. twice and finished second to the South Carolina Gamecocks in both meets. GSU will run Friday at the College of Charleston Invitational. The meet will be the final race before the Sun Belt Championships on Nov. 2 in Mobile, Ala.
Georgia Southern at College of Charleston Invitational
Date – Friday, October 17
Location – Charleston, S.C./Trophy Lakes
Time – 5 p.m.
Teams – Allen, Benedict, Campbell, University of Charleston, Charleston Southern, The Citadel, Claflin, College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, Paine, Pfeiffer, Savannah State, South Carolina State, Spartanburg Methodist, UNC Wilmington, USC Upstate and Winthrop.
EAGLES FINISH 7th IN LARGE FIELD
Georgia Southern placed ahead of Florida International and Presbyterian in a field of nearly 30 teams at the Disney Cross Country Classic last Saturday. Karli Koning led the Eagles with a time of 19:35.29, while Ashton Lord finished second with a career best time of 20:01.48.
EAGLES POST THREE CAREER HIGHS IN ALA.
Georgia Southern posted three career highs last time out at the JSU Foothills Invitational in Oxford, Ala. Karli Koning led the Eagles across the finish line (19:01.27), shaving over 30 seconds off her previous career best time. Abigail Booth (20:01.18), Ashton Lord (20:02.59), Rebecca Parker (21:50.93) also posted career bests at the meet.
FRESHMEN UP FRONT
Either Freshmen Bailey Willett or Karli Koning has been the first Georgia Southern Eagle to cross the finish line in each of the three meets this season. Willett ran a 19:52.33 and led GSU in the Carolina Invitational, while Koning was the first Eagle across the finish line at the USC Open #1 (19:37.52), the JSU Foothills Invitational (19:01.27) and the Disney Cross Country Classic (19:35.29).
FIRST YEAR IN SUN BELT
Georgia Southern Athletics became a full member of the Sun Belt Conference officially on July 1, 2014, and the Eagles will compete in the Sun Belt Cross Country Championships on Nov. 11 in Mobile, Ala.
YOUTH MOVEMENT FOR THE EAGLES
Georgia Southern cross country opens the 2014 season with a roster of seven student-athletes, who are all either a freshman or sophomore in the program. Returning from last year's squad are sophomores Katelyn Chancey, Leigha Long, Ashton Lord and Brooke Stanley.
