Catamounts Complete Sweep of Eagles

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - A five-run fifth inning helped the Western Carolina Catamounts complete a three-game sweep of the Georgia Southern Eagles with a 7-4 win at Hennon Stadium Sunday.
Before Western Carolina's (26-16, 15-6 SoCon) five-run inning, Robbie Dodds handed Georgia Southern (21-19, 10-11 SoCon) a one-run lead with a two-out single in the top of the fifth inning.
The Catamounts sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh inning and scored five runs on seven hits. The inning started with three-straight hits off of starter Sam Howard. Adam Martin plated a pair of runs with a double. Julian Ridings, Dale Urquhart and Luke Gragg all had RBI hits in the frame.
The Eagles got two runs back in the sixth inning off of starter Jordan Smith. Smith (3-3) struck out Scooter Williams to end the inning and earn the win.
Kyle Streicher plated a run in the sixth inning after T.D. Davis and Tyler Avera led off the frame with base hits. Streicher finished the day with a career-high three hits.
Howard (5-6) suffered the loss for GSU after giving up six runs over 4.2 innings. Howard struck out six batters but allowed three walks and eight hits.
Stryker Brown walked to lead off the ninth inning, but Preston Hatcher (10) struck out Williams and recorded a pair of foul outs to record his 10th save of the season.
Western Carolina started the scoring in the second inning on a RBI ground out from Bryant Noteboom. Adam Martin doubled down the right field line to start the frame and scored from third base after Noteboom grounded out to second base.
The Catamounts added a run onto their 6-4 lead in the sixth inning. Spiess doubled down the right field line to plate a two out walk by Jacob Hoyle.
Baseball will have the mid-week off and will return home to host Elon in a three-game set starting on Friday at 6 p.m. It will be Service Appreciation Night Friday, Jimmy Buffett Beach Day Saturday and Military Appreciation Day on Sunday.
