KENNESAW, Ga. - Steve Janas threw five scoreless innings as Kennesaw State defeats Georgia Southern 5-0 in a mid-week contest at Stillwell Stadium.
Janas (1-0) allowed just two hits and struck out five batters in a combined shutout of the Eagles. The sophomore faced the minimum through three innings before allowing his second hit to Ben Morgan in the fourth inning.
Janas set the side down in order in the fifth inning before being relieved by Alan Buesnitz. Buesnitz combined with Justin McCalvin and James Connell for Kennesaw State's (7-6) first shutout of 2013.
Georgia Southern (6-6) had a few opportunities to score runs, but a double play erased a lead off single in the second inning. Morgan reached second base in the fourth inning after a base hit and a stolen base but was left stranded. Kyle Streicher walked to lead off the sixth inning but was thrown out trying to steal second base, and a lead off double in Tyler Avera was thrown out at the plate on a wild pitch.
Josh Stevenson (0-1) was handed the loss after allowing four runs – one earned – on six hits. Stevenson threw 2.1 innings before being relieved by Drew Johnson. Johnson tossed a career-high 4.2 scoreless innings and struck out three batters.
The Owls scored three unearned runs in the first inning after a two-out error by shortstop Cole Watson. Andy Almonte scored the first run of the game on the error, and a base hit from Ryan Raper and a fielder's choice by Chris McGowan drove in two more runs.
Kennesaw State added a fourth run in the second inning on a two-out triple by Jacob Bruce. Bruce plated Kal Simmons, who singled with one-out in the inning.
The Owls were held scoreless for five innings before scoring again in the eighth inning. Three consecutive singles, including a RBI base hit from Anthony Duran, scored the final run.
