The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team lost 6-1 to No. 72 College of Charleston in their Southern Conference opener at the Hanner Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
"When you compete you never want to be the team that walks away with he loss but I'm proud of the way the team competed very hard at every single position, especially in singles," said Head Coach Amy Bonner.
Smith picked up the only win for the Eagles and her second one of the season by beating Samantha Maddox 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-8) on court four. After a nail biter second set in favor of Maddox, the players needed a tiebreaker third set to decide their match. Smith made sure her second tiebreaker of the day counted and took it home 10-8 to conclude the match.
"I'm very proud of the way she competed today, and played very smart," said Bonner.
The court one doubles team of freshman Stephanie Woods and junior Paola Garrido were able to win their match against Irene Viana and Maddox, 8-4.
The Eagles will now focus on a non conference match at Troy on Saturday before they return to conference play next week.
