Where Are They Now Wednesday - Mike Shepherd
10/30/2013 8:58:00 AM | Baseball
Wednesday of each week during the football season Georgia Southern Athletics will catch up with a former coach, administrator, student-athlete, trainer, cheerleader, etc. to see where they are now and how their time at Georgia Southern helped get them there.
Mike Shepherd
Georgia Southern Baseball
1985-87
Mike Shepherd was a part of three TAAC Regular Season championships and three TAAC Tournament championships during his three years as a member of the Georgia Southern Baseball team. Shepherd was also a part of the 1987 NCAA Atlantic Regional. He was a 1986 Baseball Coaches Association All-Regional and three-time All-TAAC Eastern Division selection. After his career was finished in Statesboro, Shepherd was drafted in the 32nd round of the 1987 draft by the Cincinnati Reds.
Q: In what industry are you working?
MS: "For the last 20 years, I have been in the pharmaceutical industry and the last 13 or 15 years I have been in various leadership roles with a few different pharmaceutical companies. I have really enjoyed being in the industry over the last 20 years or so. Currently I am working at Perigo. It is an international pharmaceutical company, and I am serving as the national sales director there. I have been fortunate enough to work with a lot of talented people over the years in this industry. I also have been coaching at Peachtree Ridge High School the last two years and am able to pass on the things I learned at Georgia Southern and from coach Stallings to a new generation of athletes."
Q: What are some of your favorite memories as an Eagle?
MS: "When I look back on my favorite days, a couple of things stick out to me. The first was from my senior year when we were playing in the NCAA Regional in Tallahassee. We knocked off Miami, who was a top-5 team, in the first round of the tournament and went on to win a few games and were just a couple of games away from going to the College World Series. We also won the conference championship all three years that I was there. I am always very proud of that and the guys that I played with were very excited that we were able to win the conference championship three consecutive years. The other one is probably just everyday being on the field with the guys. I played with a lot of great players and really good guys. I have a lot of memories around bus trips, things that happened in practice or the locker room. When it is all said and done, the most memorable thing really revolves around the relationships that you had when you were there."
Q: What was one of your favorite road trips?
MS: "I always liked playing at South Carolina. Their fans were very vocal. They really just ragged you the whole time. They were very educated fans as well and would look through the media guide before the game started. They decided that I was going to be their punching bag when we were there. I always enjoyed that. It was a challenge and gave you a little more pep in your step. We played well there and won some games."
Q: What was it like to play for coach Stallings?
MS: "I was recruited by Southern out of high school. Southern was always known as a baseball teaching college. If you wanted to be the best player that you could be, Georgia Southern was a good choice because of the amount of teaching about the game that went on. I knew about Georgia Southern and coach Stallings before I went there. We might had played teams from time to time that had more talent than we did, but we always knew that we were going to out-coach everybody that we played. We knew that we knew the game as well or better than any other school that we played. A bunch of what I have been able to do in life I really owe to coach Stallings and the other coaches on the staff. I was able to see coach Stallings when I was inducted into the Mason Clements Wall of Fame at J.I. Clements Stadium, and it was just a thrill to introduce my kids to him because he taught me so much not only about baseball but also about life."
