Wednesday of each week during the football season Georgia Southern Athletics will catch up with a former coach, administrator, student-athlete, trainer, cheerleader, etc. to see where they are now and how their time at Georgia Southern helped get them there.
Charlie Edwards
West Coast Sales Rep for Martech Medical
Charlie Edwards was a four-year punter at Georgia Southern (2008-2011). Edwards was a SoCon All-Freshman selection in 2008 and a First Team All-SoCon punter and an All-American selection in 2010. He holds the school record for most punts and most punting yards in a career. Edwards averaged over 40 yards a punt in all but one season and posted a career-high 42.1 yards per punt in 2011. He was a member of the 2011 Southern Conference Championship football team and helped the Eagles return to the playoffs after a four-year drought in 2010. He has recently gotten engaged to Katie Vlass. Charlie will be in attendance at Saturday's game vs Chattanooga.
Q: Give fans an idea on what you are doing now?
CE: "I am the West Coast Sales Rep for Martech Medical. My sales area is the entire west coast plus Nevada and Arizona. What I do everyday is travel around to medical device companies that have projects that need custom work. The main part of my job is relationship building and being accountable for things you say you are going to do and all of those things I learned while I was at Georgia Southern. My office is any Starbucks that is nearby with free wifi. I don't work out of an office since I travel around from company to company meeting with a lot of engineers and business development type people."
Q: What are some of your most memorable moments as an Eagle?
CE: "Now that I am done, the things that stand out to me the most are the daily camaraderie with the all the guys. I think that when you get done playing and you start working, you have moments throughout the day where you are like this time last year I was walking to practice and goofing off or talking with whomever. If I had to narrow it down to a single moment, I would say that win at Wofford in 2011 for the Southern Conference Championship. That was pretty cool. It was nice to get that win and be a part of the team that got Georgia Southern back on top."
Q: How did your experience as a student-athlete at Georgia Southern prepare you for life after college?
CE: "The biggest things I learned were perseverance and accountability. Things don't go your way in football a lot and when they don't go your way, you are forced to work through those issues. When things don't go your way you can do one of two things. You can quit or try to improve it and just figure it out. You also learn to be accountable to your teammates and yourself. Working with others is a big part of being on a team. I appreciated having the opportunity to learn to put others before myself and to work with people that don't have the same personalities. The entire football experience also helped prepare me for my move across the country and allowed me the opportunity to take my current job."
Q: How did the classroom prepare you for working in a professional environment?
CE: "The classroom gave me deadlines and my teachers held me to those deadlines. I had a couple of classes with
Chris Geyerman, and I enjoyed those classes more than anything because it was a relaxed setting but no nonsense at the same time. He would give us papers and assignments and we had to have them done, and there was no 'hey can I get you this on Monday' when it was due on Friday. When he said it was due Friday it was due Friday. Things like that I did not realize I would appreciate until I got out of school."
Q: What brought you to Georgia Southern?
CE: "I started my career at UAB and realized after two semesters that it was not the right fit for me. I knew I wanted to come back to Georgia to play. In high school I got recruited by Brian Van Gorder's staff at Georgia Southern. I went to my first GSU game in 2006 and it was the Georgia Southern-Appalachian State double overtime game. There was a big crowd at that game which was a pretty cool experience. Chris Hatcher took over in 2007 and even though he recruited me at Valdosta State, we kind of lost touch and I went to UAB to start my college career. When I decided to transfer, there was really only one school I wanted to go to and that was Georgia Southern. I remember calling Hatcher and saying I am coming to school there and asking about open tryouts."
