STATESBORO, Ga.- Georgia Southern women's tennis hosted the GSU Fall Invitational this weekend, which included players from Armstrong Atlantic, Savannah State, Emory, Stetson, Florida Atlantic, Kennesaw State, Wofford, Western Carolina, and Jacksonville State. The Eagles tallied some good wins on their home courts, and head coach Amy Bonner was pleased with the quality of play.
"The team had a great weekend competing on their home courts against some quality opponents," said Bonner. "All of the players picked up some good wins during the course of the weekend and will hopefully give them some confidence as they close out the fall season next weekend at the Wofford Invitational. I was very proud of Lani Tummers for winning her singles flight. She went undefeated in both singles and doubles and I was excited to see her game come together after a month of training since our last competition. It was great to get to compete at home during the fall season. The field of opponents made for some great tennis and I'm proud of the team for the way they competed in every match."
Lani Tummers finished the weekend successfully, defeating opponents from Emory, Wofford, and Stetson to win her singles flight. Eagle Stephanie Woods came in second place in her singles flight, and was able to beat opponents from Wofford and Stetson before losing to Barbora Krtickova from Armstrong Atlantic in the finals. Mary Phillips Smith won the consolation bracket of her singles flight by defeating an opponent from Jacksonville State in the semi-finals and handily beating Florida Atlantic's Claire Mitchell-Andrews 6-0, 6-3 in the finals.
In doubles play, the duo of Lani Tummers and McKinsey Fiveash won their bracket, defeating teams from Emory and Jacksonville State.
The Eagles head to the Wofford Invitational next weekend, November 1st-3rd to finish out their fall season.
