Strong Starting Pitching Caps Off Weekend Scrimmages

STATESBORO, Ga. - Strong outings by starters Justin Hess (Panama City, Fla.) and Sam Howard (Carterville, Ga.) capped off a weekend of Georgia Southern Baseball scrimmages at J.I. Clements Stadium. What opened in a pitcher's duel ended in a 4-4 tie after both teams scored three runs each in the eighth and final inning.
The White team took a three-run lead on Casey Kicklighter's (Jesup, Ga.) two-run homer in the top of the eighth, before the Blue team tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. Three-straight hits opened the bottom half and scored a run before Scooter Williams (Detroit, Mich.) and Victor Roache (Ypsilanti, Mich.) tied the game with RBI singles.
Hess opened the game for the Blue team by tossing four scoreless frames, and Jared Cheek (Buckhead, Ga.) threw two hitless innings out of the bullpen. Sam Howard started for the White squad allowed just one run on five hits in 3.2 innings and struck out two batters. Drew Johnson (Peachtree City, Ga.) helped keep the Blue team in check with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The pitching staff did not have all the highlights. T.D. Davis (Evans, Ga.) went a perfect four-for-four with four singles for the Blue squad, who finished with 11 hits. Ben Morgan (Evans) had a solid day at the bottom of the order with two hits, including a sixth-inning double, a walk and a sacrifice bunt.

The Eagles return to the field next weekend for three scrimmages and will host the annual Little Eagles Baseball Camp on Saturday at 9 a.m.
