CLINTON, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Presbyterian College in Clinton on Saturday. Eight Eagles notched wins as the team won eight of nine total matches to come away with a 6-1 win.
"It was great to come away with our first win of the season," said Head Coach Amy Bonner. "It was a team effort and I was really proud of the way we showed up ready to play after suffering two tough losses last weekend. Our doubles play looked strong and we never let up in singles."
The Eagles (1-2) got on the board quickly by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) and Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) got the win at No. 1 doubles, while Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.) prevailed at No. 2 doubles. The team of Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) and Taylor Jones (Warner Robins, Ga.) rounded off doubles play with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles never let off the gas pedal when they transitioned to singles play. Williams notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, while Prickett won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Garrido clinched the match victory for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, improving her record to 6-0 in singles and doubles play on the season. Joining the rest of the team in the win column were Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) at No. 5 singles and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) at No. 3 singles, winning by 7-6, 6-3 scores.
The Eagles will try to keep momentum on their side when they take the courts again on Sunday. First serve is set for 1 p.m. in Macon as the Eagles take on the Bears of Mercer.
