STATESBORO, GA. – Following Wednesday night’s SoCon Opener against Elon, Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball is back on the conference trail with a Saturday matinee at Samford. The Eagles face the Bulldogs starting at 1 p.m. (ET)/Noon (CT) inside the Pete Hanna Center. GSU is in search of its first league win after dropping a five-point decision earlier this week.
Due to Saturday’s football game at Paulson Stadium, the Georgia Southern Radio Network will not broadcast the game. Samford will provide live video of the contest for free on SamfordSports.com.
Against Elon the Eagles cut a 15-point deficit to two points in a matter of five minutes in the closing stages of Wednesday’s SoCon Opener. Georgia Southern was led by 16 points from Tré Bussey. Eric Ferguson dropped a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench while C.J. Reed drained three baskets from downtown to score 13 points in the loss.
Ferguson leads the Eagles this year with 13.7 points per game, raising his career scoring total to 917 points. The junior has 441 rebounds to his name, positioning him to become the 10th member of the 1,000 point/500 rebound club at Georgia Southern.
Samford opens league play on Saturday afternoon with a 1-7 overall record to open the year, including losses to Louisville, Memphis. On Wednesday night, Samford fell to Florida Gulf Coast 86-62 with 12 points from Tim Williams and 10 from Jaylen Beckham, both coming off the bench. The Bulldogs shot 19.0% from beyond the arc, well off their season average of 30.5%.
This year the Bulldogs are averaging 60.6 points per game behind a 15.3 ppg average from Williams. Raijon Kelly is the only other Bulldog in double-figures with 13.8 ppg along with 3.9 assists per contest.
GSU gets a week off before hosting Brewton-Parker on Saturday, December 8th, inside Hanner Fieldhouse. The Eagles will get another week off before visiting Virginia Tech to open the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic on December 15th.
