SECAUCUS, N.J. - Shawn Payne was the first Georgia Southern Eagle taken on day three of the 2011 MLB Draft. Payne, like Andy Moye (Alpharetta, Ga.), saw his draft stock rise after returning for their senior year. Payne was the 1,077 overall pick of the 2011 draft and 35th round selection of the San Francisco Giants.
The Stone Mountain, Ga., native hit .314 with six home runs and 39 RBIs while starting nearly every game of the season in centerfield. Payne stole 33 bases in 36 attempts. He finished tied for sixth all-time in GSU history with 76 career stolen bases.
Payne was a 44th-round pick of the Kansas City Royals last year and improved 11 rounds after electing to return for his senior year. One of three seniors, he helped lead the Eagles to a 2011 Southern Conference Tournament Championship and a NCAA Regional appearance.
