STATESBORO, Ga.
- Georgia Southern Softball (27-24, 15-5 SoCon) utilized two superb
pitching performances to take two wins over UNCG (19-26, 7-10 SoCon)
on Friday night, April 22nd, at Eagle Field. Senior Brianna Streetmon
(Winder, Ga.) allowed just four hits and no earned runs in the
Eagles' 3-1 win to open the series. Allie Miles' (Dacula, Ga.)
dominant pitching performance in game two allowed the offense to
thrive in a 8-0 victory in six innings. Miles struck out 15 of the 20
batters she faced in the one-hit shutout victory.
On Saturday, Georgia Southern honors its four seniors
who play their final home regular-season game at Eagle Field. Kelly Burnett, Bethany Crenshaw, Megen Smith and Brianna Streetmon will be
recognized in a pre-game ceremony prior to the 1 p.m. series finale
against UNCG. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 12:40 p.m.
"It's a great night to be an Eagle," said Head
Coach Maggie Johnson. "After a tough weather delay, I'm so proud of
the focus we were able to maintain through both games. We are playing
good softball right now and will work to continue to improve down the
stretch."
Miles finished with a career-high 15 strikeouts, just
two shy of matching Aimee Littlejohn's total of 17 set in 2002
against Campbell. Miles would have had a chance to go for the record
in the seventh, however Georgia Southern's eighth run of the game
ended the contest after six innings of play. Her total ranks third on
the single-game strikeouts list and she needs just two more
strikeouts to reach the top-10 on the Georgia Southern single-season
strikeout chart. Miles 145 strikeouts this season leads the Southern
Conference.
The Georgia Southern offense was in full swing on
Friday, touching the Spartans for 15 total hits, five for extra
bases. Junior Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) notched her second triple of
the season and was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader with three RBI. Junior
Hanna Ennis (Snellville, Ga.) also posted three RBI with a double.
Sophomore Kayla Brooks (Jonesboro, Ga.) continued to swing the hot
bat, going 3-for-5 with a RBI in game two.
-GAME 1-
The start of the series was delayed three hours due
to thunderstorms. The Eagles opened the scoring in game one with a
double down the rightfield line by Fogle. The play scored Alexa Lewis
(Lawrenceville, Ga.), but Jorie Walker (Dublin, Ga.) was cut down at
the plate trying to score. The throw allowed Fogle to reach third and
score on the next play off a sacrifice fly by Ennis for a 2-0 Eagle
lead.
UNCG bounced back in the fourth to plate their only
run of the game off Streetmon's throwing error. With a runner on
second, Kaitlin Merkt's grounder back to the circle was fielded and
thrown away. This allowed April Langley to score the unearned run and
slice the Georgia Southern lead to 2-1.
Ennis recorded her second RBI in the game an inning
later in the fifth to put the Eagles up 3-1. The junior shortstop
ripped the ball to the power-alley in right and brought Lewis home
from second base.
Three runs was all Streetmon needed to pick up her
11th win of the season. She allowed just four hits and used only 98
pitches to give the Eagles their fourth-straight league win.
-GAME 2-
The evening's second game belonged to Miles. She
threw her second one-hitter of the season, spoiled only by a double
down the left field line en route to a 8-0 Georgia Southern victory.
Miles recorded nine of her strikeouts in the fourth, fifth and sixth
innings. Georgia Southern scored its 11th shutout of the season and
the fourth for Miles. She has not allowed an earned run in her last
21.0 innings of work.
The Eagle offense was the beneficiary of three
first-inning errors en route to a two-run first frame. Fogle, who
reached on a leadoff single, scored as a result of the second
baseman's throwing error on a ground ball. Later in the frame, Brooks
singled on an attempted sacrifice bunt with runners on first and
second. The throw to first base was mishandled by the second baseman
which allowed Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) to score. As she crossed
to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead, another errant throw allowed the
runners to advance another base.
Fogle's second triple of the season in the fourth
inning allowed Georgia Southern to score three in the frame. With
Kelly Burnett (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Walker aboard, Fogle legged
out the triple to right-center. As she reached third, a high throw to
third left the playing field and allowed Fogle to score on the error
and post a 5-0 Georgia Southern lead.
In the fifth, Burnett's single to center brought
pinch-runner Breigh Findlay (Macon, Ga.) in to score while Tabby Douberley (Clyo, Ga.) laced a double down the line in left to send
Burnett across for a 7-0 GSU lead.
The Eagles finished-off the Spartans in the sixth on
Smith's double to left field. The hit scored Ennis from second base
and secured the 8-0 Georgia Southern victory.
