JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – The Georgia Southern Eagles (10-11) split a pair of games on Saturday, March 7, at the Jacksonville Classic, earning a dramatic walk-off victory over Presbyterian before falling to North Florida later in the day.
vs. Presbyterian (11-12)
The Eagles delivered late-game heroics as Georgia Southern walked off with a win over Presbyterian behind a clutch hit from freshman Demere Gray.
With the game tied late, Gray came through in the biggest moment, lining a walk-off double that brought home the winning run and secured the victory for Georgia Southern. The hit capped a hard-fought battle and provided the Eagles with a dramatic finish.
Georgia Southern generated offense throughout the contest, putting runners on base and applying pressure in key moments.
The Eagles strung together timely hits to stay within reach before Gray's decisive extra-base hit sealed the win. The freshman led the offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and two RBI.
In the circle, Hannah Worthington (1-0) earned her first career win as an Eagle.
The right-hander delivered a steady performance in relief, tossing two innings while holding Presbyterian in check down the stretch and giving Georgia Southern the opportunity to complete the comeback. Worthington allowed two hits and two runs while issuing two walks, helping keep the game tied until the Eagles' offense broke through in the final at-bat.
Gray's walk-off double sealed the win and highlighted a strong team effort as Georgia Southern secured another victory during the Jacksonville Classic.
vs. UNF (23-5)
Georgia Southern fell a 13-4 decision to North Florida in five innings Saturday evening during day two of tournament play
North Florida struck early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. The Ospreys added three more runs in the second and third innings to extend their advantage to 10-0 before the Eagles were able to get on the board.
Georgia Southern responded in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs to cut into the deficit. The Eagles continued to chip away with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but North Florida answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.
Despite the early deficit, the Eagles showed resilience offensively late in the game, producing runs in three consecutive innings. Georgia Southern continued to apply pressure at the plate as the lineup worked to generate opportunities against the Osprey pitching staff.
