Women's Tennis Stumbles Against Stetson

STATESBORO, Ga. - Stetson pushed its win total to 10 with a 5-2 win over the Georgia Southern Women's Tennis (4-5) team on Thursday, March 10th at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Admirable play by Eagle seniors Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) on an extremely windy day provided the points for Georgia Southern.
An 8-4 win by teammates Carolina De Los Santos and Unnati Purushotham at number-one doubles claimed the first match for Stetson. Stetson's duo of Lindsey Cable and Shannon Gunning clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 decision at the number-two seed and gave the Hatters an early 1-0 advantage.
Beavers recorded straight set wins over Stetson's Purushotham at number-two singles with scores of 6-4 and 6-1. After losing her first set to Stauffer-MacDowell at the number-five seed, Hungerford came back with a 7-5 win in the second set. She won the super tiebreaker, 10-6, for the second GSU point of the day.
The Eagles return to Southern Conference play after splitting this week's non-conference matches against Stetson today and with Wednesday's win over Florida Gulf Coast. Georgia Southern travels to Davidson (4-7) and Appalachian State (5-3) this weekend for its second set of league matches. The Eagles and Wildcats meet Saturday, March 12th, at 10 a.m. at the Covington Tennis Courts. Sunday's (March 13th) match against the Mountaineers begins at 12 p.m. at the ASU Tennis Courts.
