Rolle Named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern's Melanie Rolle has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches February 15-21 the league office announced Tuesday (Feb. 23). Rolle went undefeated last week, posting a 2-0 mark in both singles and doubles play for the Eagles. The Player of the Week is awarded by the conference office.
Rolle clinched the win over Coastal Carolina on Saturday. With the match standing at 3-2, Rolle held off Kim Webb, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to give the Eagles the deciding point in the match. She then moved up to No. 1 singles on Sunday and topped Hampton's Jovanna Sangria in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).
The Gainesville, Fla., native also picked up two doubles wins on the week. The team of Ashley Hungerford and Rolle downed Coastal Carolina's Kim Webb and Maria Camberos, 8-6. Rolle then was paired with Jessica Fuller at No. 2 doubles on Sunday and picked up an 8-1 win over Hampton's Barenese Myers and Maria Ycaza.
“I'm excited for Melanie to be recognized with the honor,” said head coach Amy Bonner. “She played extremely well over the weekend and is deserving of the award. Our team still has some work to do, but with leadership like Melanie's, the team is in good hands.”
Georgia Southern (4-2) visits Georgia State Friday afternoon.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Caroline Newman, Davidson's Stephanie Synn, Elon's Laura Graybill, Furman's Jessica Preeg, Chattanooga's Beata Knizat and Western Carolina's Karen Jimenez Sarmiento.
