STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team had a strong showing on the opening day of the SpringHill Suites Invitational (October 16). Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) and Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) both went undefeated in singles and doubles action.
“I was really proud of the way the team competed today,” said Head Coach Amy Bonner. “Fall tournaments are a great time to get experience for the spring and today we really came out ready to play. I was impressed by the effort and competitiveness the team brought to the court today. It's always nice to play on our home courts and we really used that to our advantage. We are looking to finish strong tomorrow and hope to walk away with some more wins.”
Competing in the orange draw, Garrido rebounded from a first set loss to defeat Akilah James of South Carolina State in a super tiebreak and then dropped only five games en route to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Carolina Lainez of Western Carolina in her second singles match. Also going undefeated on the day, Hungerford dropped only four games over Aurelie de Montjou of Mercer before defeating Karen Jiminez of WCU in the gold draw.
Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) split a pair of singles matches, winning her first in straight sets over Isabella Glinska of Western Carolina. Meanwhile, Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) grabbed a win over Ainhoa Iglesias of WCU in a super tiebreak. Competing in the same draw, teammate Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) suffered a super tiebreak loss to Sabrina Mendez of SCSU.
Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.) split matches, grabbing a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Layne Arnold of WCU before falling to Stephanie Cohen of Mercer, 6-2, 6-2. After falling to Suhaila Jad of SCSU, Taylor Jones (Warner Robins, Ga.) defeated teammate Alexandra Langmo (Boca Raton, Fla.) in a super tiebreak. Langmo had won earlier in singles action, sweeping Katie Barry of Western Carolina, 6-0, 6-0. Rounding out singles play in the pink draw, teammates Sydney Brown (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Courtney Chaney (McDonough, Ga.) faced off against each other with Chaney earning the match, 6-3, 6-3. Both Brown and Chaney fell in their second matches.
The opening day of competition saw one round of doubles action where Rolle and Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) were victorious over Jennifer Lada and Aurelie de Montjou of Mercer, 8-4. In flight B, Hungerford and Garrido teamed up to down Daria Sekerina and Mendez of SCSU, 8-5. Flight C saw a pair of Georgia Southern doubles tandems take on each other as Beeler and Dzuba defeated Langmo and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.), 8-2.
