Eagles Fall in Game One of the SoCon Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Georgia Southern softball team (25-24) dropped the first game of the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament to Furman 9-3. The Eagles struck first, but eight unanswered runs by the Paladins put the game out of reach.
Mackenzie Williams (Baxley, Ga.) went two for three with a pair of base hits.
Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) led off the bottom of the first with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.). Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) reached on an error by the first baseman, moving Iduate to third base. Amanda Hall (Haddock, Ga.) walked to load the bases before Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) drove in the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
Furman responded scoring two runs in the second inning. Back-to-back doubles by Jessie Homesley and Kate Termini scored the first run of the inning with one out. A fielding error by Siliga allowed Termini to move into third. Abby Robertson plated Termini with a single.
The Paladins added another run in the third inning on a RBI double to left center by Jessie Homesley.
Furman scored four runs in the fifth inning, opening up an 8-1 lead. Homesley and Termini had back-to-back one out singles before a double by Michaels plated two runs. Stephanie Field doubled down the left field line with two outs, keeping the rally going. Abby Roberston drove in the third run of the inning with a RBI double. Cushing plated the fourth run with a single back up the middle.
The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning on Hall's double to left center. Fogle singled after two quick outs and moved to second on a walk by Siliga. Hall doubled scoring two runs.
Softball awaits the loser of Chattanooga vs Western Carolina at 5 p.m. on Frost Field.
