STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern softball team (23-22, 12-9) will host its final regular season series against Furman (20-25, 10-10) this weekend. The Eagles will also host Senior Day on Saturday and will honor their seniors in between games one and two. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
The Eagles will look to rebound after dropping last weekend's SoCon series to Chattanooga.
GSU traveled to Athens and faced #8 Georgia in their final non-conference game Wednesday. The Eagles almost pulled off the upset, sending the game to extra innings. The Eagles held a fifth inning 2-1 lead after Mackenzie Williams (Baxley, Ga.) went yard, but a walk-off double in the eighth inning gave the Bulldogs the win.
The Paladins are coming off a series sweep of Western Carolina last weekend, in which they allowed only one run. Furman sports the second best pitching staff in the SoCon with a 3.04 team ERA and ranks fourth in hitting with a team average of .273. The Paladins also have the best fielding percentage in the league (.974).
Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) ranks eighth in SoCon games hitting .379 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) leads the league in ERA (2.11) and boasts an even better 1.85 ERA in SoCon games.
The Eagles will have a second place finish and a second straight winning season at stake. GSU finished 37-30 last year after making a run to the tournament championship game.
Softball will honor its four seniors Michelle Beasley (Metter, Ga.), Amanda Hall (Haddock, Ga.), Jordyn Nail (Swainsboro, Ga.) and Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) for all they have done in helping the Eagles reach three straight tournament finals and winning the 2006 SoCon Tournament.
