Chris Godfrey begins his second season as an assistant coach on the Georgia Southern women's basketball staff for the 2023-24 season.
Godfrey enters his ninth season as a women’s college basketball coach, and his second season at Georgia Southern University. His previous stops include Coastal Bend College, Kilgore College, Eastern Oklahoma State College, Northwest Florida State College, Prairie View A&M University, and most recently Gulf Coast State College.
Godfrey began his coaching career after successful stints in the fields of journalism and multicultural affairs.
While studying journalism at St. John’s University, Godfrey interned as a staff writer with the New York Post, covering high school basketball, football, baseball, and lacrosse. He was hired and mentored by current ESPN sportswriter Marc Raimondi. Godfrey would later become a basketball analyst for the New York City Sports Network, covering events such as the PSAL City Basketball Championships in Madison Square Garden. After garnering a following by launching his own blog dedicated to college sports, Godfrey began working for FanSided as a co-editor, and later became editor-in-chief of the network’s college basketball website, Busting Brackets.
After graduating from St. John’s University in 2012, Godfrey dedicated the next two years of his life to national service, becoming an AmeriCorps volunteer in New York City, working as a tutor, mentor, and community liaison in public schools.
After serving, he began graduate studies at Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA (now Georgia Southern University). At Armstrong, Godfrey worked in the Office of Multicultural Affairs, where he coordinated the Men of Vision and Excellence (MOVE) near-peer mentoring program, a student retention program funded by a grant from the University System of Georgia’s African-American Male Initiative. Godfrey’s contributions to the grant were instrumental in a $40,000 increase in funding that allowed the program to grow from 12 students to 70 in a two-year span. After graduating from Armstrong, Godfrey returned to New York for a short time to work as a graduate admissions and enrollment counselor at Dowling College. He then transitioned back to Multicultural Affairs at the University of Vermont, where he was named Coordinator of Assessment and Retention as well as director of the school’s Summer Enrichment Scholars Program.
Godfrey left Vermont to fulfill his dream of becoming a college basketball coach, landing at Coastal Bend College in Beeville, TX. Godfrey’s time at Coastal Bend was marked by numerous first-time achievements. The program recorded its first ever wins against NJCAA competition and its first conference wins during Godfrey’s debut season with the program. Three of Godfrey’s Coastal Bend Cougars would eventually play at the NCAA Division I level. Zandra Emanuel led the nation in defensive rebounding for the 2015-2016 season before signing with Texas State, while sisters Daniela and Emily Azubell would both go on to play at University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
Godfrey’s work at Coastal Bend caught the eye of then Kilgore College head coach Anna Nimz, who added him to her staff in the summer of 2017. Godfrey took the reins of preseason skill development as well as post player development during the season, while also handling duties as the program’s recruiting coordinator. His lone season at Kilgore culminated with a berth in the NJCAA Region 14 Tournament final. Jade Thurmon would lead the nation in points per game for the 2017-2018 season before signing with Iowa State, and Richelle Velez would finish fifth in the country in three-pointers made on her way to signing with Texas Southern.
Godfrey then spent one season as the assistant coach at Eastern Oklahoma State College where he helped guide freshman post player Britnee Gabriel to a standout freshman season that led to her signing at Texas Southern.
In the summer of 2019, Godfrey arrived at Northwest Florida, just in time to help the program secure a conference championship and a FSCAA Region 8 tournament title. He continued his penchant for post development, helping Rayven Peeples and Chanaya Pinto both earn NJCAA All-American honors. Peeples, along with teammate Fapou Semebene chose to continue her career at St. John’s University. Another sophomore, Gabriela Sales moved on to the University of Texas at El Paso.
Godfrey was hired as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Prairie View A&M University in October of 2020, joining the staff of legendary SWAC head coach Sandy Pugh. During his season at Prairie View, Godfrey oversaw the recruitment of a seven-person class that is considered to be one of the best in the history of the program.
In August of 2021, Godfrey returned to the Florida Panhandle to assist new head coach Rory Kuhn at Gulf Coast State. In his only season at Gulf Coast, Godfrey helped lead the Commodores to a 19-10 overall record and a second place finish in the Panhandle Conference. After the season, guard Morgan Robinson-Nwagwu received NJCAA All-America honors before signing with the University of Central Florida and forward Avalon Miller signed with the University of Houston.
At Georgia Southern, Godfrey will assist with recruiting coordinator duties as well as serving as the coordinator of video and analytics.
