New hire becomes the 10th coach in program history
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Chris Davis announced today that Heather Macy has been hired as the Eagles' next head women's basketball coach. Macy comes to Statesboro from Nova Southeastern University, where she led the Sharks to a 29-5 record, a Sunshine State Conference tournament title and a fourth straight berth into the NCAA Division II women's basketball tournament.
A day and time for a press conference and public meet and greet introducing Macy to the Georgia Southern University community will be announced at a later date.
"Heather Macy is a proven winner with more than two decades of success leading programs at every level of college basketball," Davis said. "She has consistently elevated teams, from building championship contenders to leading one of the most successful stretches in East Carolina history, and her ability to develop players and produce results stands out. Her experience recruiting and coaching across the Southeast, combined with her emphasis on leadership, accountability and culture, makes her an outstanding fit for Georgia Southern and the Statesboro community. We are excited about the competitive edge and championship mindset she will bring to our program."
Macy becomes the 10th head coach in Georgia Southern women's basketball history, coming to Statesboro as an incredibly accomplished collegiate head coach. In 20 seasons as a head coach at a variety of levels, Macy has collected a 383-212 overall record (.644) with 11 of her 20 seasons resulting in 20 or more wins. Her Nova Southeastern squad in 2025-26 claimed the program's first league tournament title since 2015 and featured an offense that ranked fifth in NCAA Division II in scoring at 82.6 points per game and a defense that ranked third in the nation in steals per game (16.6) and second in turnover margin (+10.88). The team broke program records for points, scoring average, field goals made and attempted, rebounding average, steals, scoring margin and rebounding margin in a single season.
"First, I would like to thank President Marrero, Director of Athletics Chris Davis and the entire search committee for their confidence in selecting me for this position," Macy said. "I am truly honored to be the next women's basketball coach at Georgia Southern. I am anxiously awaiting getting to campus and starting the process of connecting with Eagle fans and supporters, the athletic staff and our team. Our staff will bring a high competitive index every day to the court. I believe our system of play will be not only fun for the fans but a successful system for our student-athletes. We want to build on the momentum and energy already surrounding the women's basketball program in Statesboro. I've never been more prepared or ready to get started.
"I would also like to thank Nova Southeasten University for the opportunity to coach the Sharks last season. I am extremely proud of all that we accomplished and a big thank you to Coach Jim Crutchfield for his support and belief in our vision. Again, super grateful for this opportunity at Georgia Southern. It's time to GATA!"
Prior to Nova Southeastern, Macy made head coaching stops at Barry, Greensboro College and Spartanburg Methodist College. Macy also directed Francis Marion to three 20-win seasons and three NCAA Division II tournament berths from 2007-10. She began her head coaching career at Pfeiffer University from 2005-07.
While obtaining her B.S. in sport & exercise studies (Cum Laude) from Greensboro in 2000, Macy was a four-year member of the Pride women's basketball team. During her playing career, Macy placed her name in the Pride's record books for three-point field goals attempted and made, while also ranking ninth in all-time games played with 105.
