Georgia Southern closes out its home schedule with a record-tying 14 wins
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's basketball sent its seniors home as winners on Saturday afternoon, recording a come-from-behind 67-54 win over visiting ULM at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center.
The Eagles (21-6, 14-2 SBC) wrapped up one of their most successful home campaigns ever, tying the school record for home wins (14) with the victory over the Warhawks (13-14, 6-10 SBC). The other two seasons with 14 home wins were 1981-82, when the Eagles went 14-0, and 1986-87, when GS went 14-2.
Prior to the game, Georgia Southern honored its four seniors - Kishyah Anderson, Destiny Garrett, Shanti Simmons and McKenna Eddings in a pre-game ceremony.
It almost did not come to pass as ULM used a stifling first-half defense to take a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 34-29 lead at halftime. The Eagles were 0-6 this season when trailing at the half before today.
The third quarter was an offensive explosion for the home team as the Eagles put up 25 points, hitting 9-of-14 shots rom the floor (64.3 percent) while also drilling 3-of-5 threes. A 10-0 run midway through the frame turned a seven-point ULM lead into a three-point home advantage and the Eagles never looked back.
Destiny Garrett led Georgia Southern offensively on the day with 22 points, while reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Kishyah Anderson added 19 points. J'Mani Ingram's 15 points led ULM in the contest.
Eagle of the Game
Garrett hit 9-of-15 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 three-pointers, for her seventh 20+ point performance of the year. She added five rebounds, three steals and two assists while playing all 40 minutes for a sixth time this season.
Stat of the Game
Kishyah Anderson hit 7-of-14 shots from the floor en route to her 19 points - her fourth straight contest in which she has shot 50% or better from the floor.
Quotables
Head coach Hana Haden on the victory over ULM on Senior Day
"I'm just so proud of the team for their resilience in this game. We couldn't get much going positive for ourselves it seemed like and credit to ULM, they're a really tough team. We saw them almost beat Troy on the road last week.So we knew it was going to be that type of game. I was really impressed with our togetherness through the first 25 minutes when we really couldn't get in a rhythm."
On the pivotal third quarter
"I think we just showed a little more composure offensively. ULM does a really good job of switching their defenses, and I felt like we spent a little too much time figuring out what they were in there in the first half, rather than just execute our offense. The press also got us going, when we were able to get turnovers and points in transition, that was huge."
Next Up
Georgia Southern will be on the road for its final two games of the regular season, starting on Wednesday, February 25, in a 6:30 p.m. contest at App State.
