STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern Eagles (17-19, 5-6 SBC) even the series with a shutout victory, 2-0, over ULM (24-18, 7-4 SBC) on Friday evening.
Before Friday's game, the Warhawks held an eight-game winning streak over the Eagles, but Georgia Southern snapped it with a shutout victory.
The Eagles leaned on a dominant performance in the circle from Alana Barnard (6-8), who tossed a complete-game shutout. The right-hander scattered five hits across seven innings, did not issue a walk, and struck out four to keep the Warhawks off the scoreboard while adding another win to her resume.
After three scoreless innings to open the game, the Eagles broke through in the fourth.
Following a leadoff walk and a productive advance, Demere Gray delivered an RBI double to right center to plate the game's first run and give Georgia Southern a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Delanie Thames led off with a double and later came around to score on an RBI double from Emma Davis, extending the advantage to 2-0.
Gray paced the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 night at the plate, including a pair of doubles and an RBI. Davis added a double and a run driven in, while Thames contributed a hit, run scored, and stolen base at the top of the lineup.
ULM Warhawks softball threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but Barnard induced a key out to escape the jam and preserve the shutout.
Georgia Southern's pitching and defense held firm down the stretch, recording 21 outs in the field, highlighted by a career-high 12 putouts from Queen, and retiring the final four batters of the game to secure the win.
The Eagles will look to carry that momentum into Saturday as they battle for their second conference series win of the season.
