Eagles Surge in Fourth to Knock Off App State, 3-2

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern Eagles (20-28, 7-13 SBC) used a clutch fourth inning and strong pitching down the stretch to secure a 3-2 win over the App State Mountaineers (28-18, 7-13 SBC) on Senior Day.
App State jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, taking advantage of a defensive miscue and an RBI single to go up 2-0. The Mountaineers collected three hits in the frame and put immediate pressure on Georgia Southern.
Senior Alana Barnard settled in the circle after the opening inning, keeping App State off the scoreboard the rest of her outing and giving the Eagles a chance to respond.
Georgia Southern delivered in the fourth.
Delanie Thames ignited the comeback with a solo home run to right field, her 12th of the season, cutting the deficit to one. Veteran Emma Davis followed with a single, and after working baserunners on, the Eagles executed in key moments.
The freshmen pair stepped up in the batter's box. Jaycee Bilbrey tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and Demere Gray added another sac fly to bring home the go-ahead run.
Despite being limited to just two hits, Georgia Southern capitalized on walks and productive outs to manufacture all three runs in the inning.
Barnard (7-14) earned the win, allowing two runs over 4.1 innings, while Kaylee Croft closed the game with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to record the save. Croft allowed just one hit and kept App State from mounting a late rally to record her first career save. .
App State managed five hits in the game but couldn't push across another run after the first inning, as Georgia Southern's pitching and defense held firm.
