HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Georgia Southern Eagles (19-22, 6-9 SBC) suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Southern Miss (29-17, 10-5 SBC) on Sunday evening, as the Golden Eagles used a late rally in the seventh inning to secure the series.
In another tightly contested matchup, both teams remained locked in a scoreless battle through six innings behind strong pitching performances.
The right-hander Alana Barnard was solid in the circle, holding Southern Miss to just five hits while striking out two through 6.1 innings of work.
Georgia Southern broke through in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on an opportunity to take the lead.
Veteran Emma Davis sparked the inning with a double and advanced to third on an error before Valerie Combs brought her home with a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Southern Miss answered at the bottom of the seventh.
A leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt moved the tying run into scoring position before a triple to left center evened the score. Moments later, a single through the infield plated the go-ahead run, sealing the 2-1 victory for the Golden Eagles.
Offensively, the Eagles were limited to four hits on the day, with Davis and Brooke Kell each recording multiple hits.
Despite the loss, Georgia Southern's pitching and defense kept the game within reach throughout, but the late push from Southern Miss proved to be the difference as the Eagles dropped the series finale.
