HOW IT HAPPENED:
- It was a quiet first frame for both offenses as each starter got their first K of the day to end the inning.
- The only hits Southern collected through three innings were a double by Bennett Edwards down the line and a Frank Wells single, but would not muster any runs on either of them.
- After a pitcher's duel through three, five combined runs were scored in the fourth.
- Back-to-back leadoff singles, followed by an Eagle error on sac-bunt, allowed two runs for Troy to come home after a sac-fly scored another.
- The Eagles loaded the bases after an error, walk and hit batter to start the frame. A fielder's choice from Bennett Edwards plated the Eagles' first run of the contest before Nico Senese gave Southern the lead with his two-RBI single the opposite direction.
- Troy threatened in the fifth with the bases loaded and only one away. The Eagles opted to bring in Craig Kalbrenner, who forced a flyout and a huge strikeout to keep the fifth inning clean for the Eagles.
- In the sixth, Troy used four hits and three walks to score five runs in their sixth to get their biggest lead of the series, 7-3.
- In the bottom of the eighth, a hit batter and two consecutive singles with one away loaded the bases for the Eagles. Edwards continued the inning, reaching on a Troy error to cut the deficit to just three.
- However, the Trojans clapped back in the top of the ninth as a three-run homer from Darnell following walks to the previous two batters put their lead back to five. A throwing error down to third on a stolen base attempt brought another home for Troy to make it 11-5.
- The Eagles last chance saw Prozny out at second on a fielder's choice but took a hard bump from the Trojans' second baseman. Although both benches cleared due to it being the final out of the contest, tempers did not flare.
NOTES:
- All seven of Southern's hits came from a different Eagles as no one had a multi-hit day.
- In just his third start of the season, Alex Mason threw four full innings, only allowing a singular earned run and two hits while striking out a career high four.
- The two squads had six combined errors on the afternoon, the most in a game since the Marshall series opener last Friday night.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles open up a four-game road stretch with a midweek at North Florida on Tuesday night (March 31st). First pitch in Jacksonville is set for 6 PM.
