HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Georgia Southern fell 9-3 to Marshall on Sunday afternoon, as the Thundering Herd used a big offensive showing to claim the series.
Marshall jumped out early and never looked back, plating runs in multiple innings to build separation. The Herd finished with nine runs on double-digit hits, capitalizing on timely hitting and taking advantage of free passes to keep pressure on the Eagles' pitching staff throughout the game.
Georgia Southern found some offense midway through the contest, pushing across three runs to try and chip into the deficit. The Eagles showed flashes at the plate, stringing together hits and taking advantage of scoring opportunities, but were unable to match Marshall's pace offensively.
Delanie Thames led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, including a solo home run to left that sparked the Eagles' rally, while Emma Davis added two hits and scored a run.
Valerie Combs contributed a multi-hit day as well, driving in a run with a double, and Carley Ramsden plated Georgia Southern's first run with an RBI single in the second inning.
Despite putting together multiple-hit innings and recording nine total knocks, the Eagles left eight runners on base and were unable to string together enough timely hits to fully close the gap.
In the circle, the Eagles utilized multiple arms in an effort to slow Marshall's lineup, but the Herd continued to find gaps and extend innings. Despite the setback, Georgia Southern continued to compete late, battling through all seven innings.
The Eagles will look to respond in the series finale as they aim to secure a conference win and regain momentum.
