Eagles Fall in 14-Inning Thriller to Marshall, 17-16

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Ethan Garrett sat two of three Marshall players down via the K in the first, the second batter of the game for the Eagles saw James McCoy keep up his hot streak with a 400+ foot homer to centerfield to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
- The Herd would punch back in the third frame, scoring three after a two-RBI triple from Tyler Kamerer, followed by a sac-fly to bring him home.
- Marshall threatened again in the fourth, placing two runners in scoring position with one away, but a popout and deep flyout ended the threat.
- Southern took the lead back in the fifth after Max Prozny slapped a two-RBI triple to right center and was just the second triple of the season by an Eagle to tie the game. Nico Senese scored Prozny a batter later on the groundout to take a 4-3 lead.
- The Herd scored four in their fifth to take a 7-3 lead off of two singles, a double, a hit batter, walk and Eagle error.
- The madness continued as Southern took back momentum as an RBI-double from James McCoy cut the deficit to two while RBI-singles from Sean White, Bryson Trammell and Prozny gave Southern the 9-7 advantage.
- Marshall evened the game at nine all in the sixth with RBI-singles from Smith and Golden.
- The next four and a half innings had zeroes across the board, including going into extra innings. The deadlock would be broken when Marshall's Halter homered of the fifth pitch of the twelfth inning to take a 10-9 lead.
- Southern stayed alive by a Sean White single before Kaden Thompson as a pinch runner moved to second on a pass ball. Trammell deliverd a looping RBI-double down the left line to tie back the game in extras.
- In the 14th, Marshall finally exploded, going for four hits and capitalizing on two Eagles errors to plate seven and make it a 17-10 advantage.
- Southern did not back down, however. They used five hits to eventually put the tying and winning runs on the base pads, but just came up one batter short to extend the contest.
NOTES:
- The 14-inning duel would be the first to go that distance since April 3rd, 2009 against College of Charleston.
- Brady Pendley left it all on the diamond on the evening, entering in the eighth inning and still threw 103 pitches. He would finish at 5.1 innings of work while striking out seven Marshall batters.
- Sean White and Bryson Trammell each went for four hits on the night, while combining for 13 ABs as well.
- Three Eagles in McCoy, Trammell and Prozny all had three RBIs on the night as well.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles and Herd continue their weekend series later today with first pitch set for 2 PM on Saturday (March 21st) during Kids Takeover at J.I. Clements Stadium.
