Eagles even their record at 6-6 by knocking off the Rattlers at Wallis
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis knocked off Florida A&M by a 4-1 score on Thursday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
With the win, the Eagles evened their record on the season at 6-6, while Florida A&M falls to 4-7. Georgia Southern will step back into Sun Belt Conference action on Saturday, traveling to Coastal Carolina for a 10 a.m. matchup against the Chanticleers.
Georgia Southern earned the doubles point thanks to a 6-3 win by Angelina Mihajlovic and Lisen Rinman at No. 1 doubles, as well as a 6-3 win by Franzi Heinemann and Nanaka Kijima at No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles played singles short-handed with only five players in the lineup, but were still able to come away with the victory. Mihajlovic earned a quick win at No. 3 singles as her opponent, Sydney Brantley, retired in the first set with Mihajlovic leading 5-2.
Evelyn Warkentin then collected a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Veronica Rodriguez. Heinemann then clinched the win for the Eagles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Reagan Harris at No. 2 singles.
"I felt the team came out really ready to compete today," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "I could sense the team had a little extra motivation today and I was happy to see everyone working incredibly hard to play our brand of tennis. Each of our doubles teams looked to be playing in really good form. Franzi and Nana played very steady and consistent while picking up their win. Lisen and Angelina did a great job to start with momentum and never let up.
"In singles, each of our courts looked to be on their way towards a win," McCaffrey said. "I believe that if Ame and Nana were to finish out they would have earned a point for the team. Angie, Evy and Franzi each did a great job of locking down their matches for the team win! Now we get ready for a big match at Coastal Carolina on Saturday!"
