CLEMSON, S.C. – The Georgia Southern Eagles battled through a challenging day of competition, falling to the Wofford Terriers Softball and No. 12 Mississippi State Bulldogs Softball (8-0) while gaining valuable experience against strong opponents, highlighted by Valerie Combs' early home run in game one and key innings in the circle against one of the nation's top-ranked teams.
vs. Wofford (15-3)
The Eagles fell 11-1 by the Terriers in the first game of Saturday morning.
Georgia Southern's lone run came in the second inning when Valerie Combs crushed a solo home run to left field – her second one of the season – tying the game at 1-1 and providing a brief spark for the Eagle offense.
Although they found sparks of offensive momentum, Wofford's defense managed to hold them off. Their lineup finished with six hits, including two by Kayla Christensen and two by Combs.
On the mound, starter Alana Barnard (1-5) took the loss, allowing five earned runs over five innings of work. Freshman Shaylin Stringer pitched the final two innings in relief, but the Terriers continued to tack on runs.
vs. No. 12 Mississippi State (17-1)
The Eagles Softball fell 8-0 to the Mississippi State Bulldogs Softball on Saturday, battling a nationally ranked opponent and gaining valuable experience against one of the country's top pitching performances.
Southern managed just one hit in the contest – a single from Emma Davis – as Mississippi State pitcher Peja Goold delivered a dominant complete-game outing, striking out eight and allowing only one additional baserunner.
Despite the final score, the Eagles continued to compete defensively and gained key innings in the circle from their staff. Freshman Kaylee Croft (1-1) worked four innings against a powerful lineup before Hannah Worthington entered in relief in the fifth, combining to finish the game and provide Southern with important reps against elite competition.
