MACON, GA. – Despite its late rally, Georgia Southern fell to Mercer 5-3 in a midweek road contest at Sikes Field.
After a scoreless start through the first two frames, the Eagles grabbed the lead in the third when Braelyn Queen delivered an RBI single to score Delanie Thames and make it 1-0.
Mercer responded with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run that put the Bears ahead 3-1. The Eagles answered in the sixth when Thames belted a two-run homer – her fourth home run of the season – that tied the game at 3-3 and brought Jaycee Bilbrey across the plate.
The game remained deadlocked into the seventh, but Mercer ended it with a walk-off two-run homer to secure the 5-3 victory.
On the mound, Alana Barnard (0-4) took the loss for Georgia Southern, allowing five runs (two earned) over 6.2 innings of work. Mercer's Katheryn Rearley earned the win with a complete game performance.
Offensively for Georgia Southern, freshman Jaycee Bilbrey led the way with a standout performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Queen also turned in a strong showing, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Despite a strong comeback effort, Georgia Southern could not overcome Mercer's go-ahead blow in the final frame.
