STATESBORO. – Georgia Southern posted a dominant offensive performance in its opening contest of the GATA Challenge tournament against Tennessee Tech (1-9), cruising to an 11-0 run-rule victory over the Golden Eagles.
The Eagles offense struck early and often, putting Tennessee Tech on its heels from the first inning.
Georgia Southern plated multiple runs in each of the first four frames, highlighted by a three-run homer from Delanie Thames, her fifth of the season, in the second inning that ignited the scoring surge.
Additional power came from freshman Demere Gray, who also went deep with a two-run homer to extend the lead. This is Gray's first career home run.
Contributions were plentiful throughout the lineup.
Veteran Emma Davis delivered a key double and drove in a run, while Carley Ramsden provided a clutch two-RBI double later in the game.
Freshman Jaycee Bilbrey was a catalyst early and often, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Braelyn Queen also made her presence felt, recording two hits in two at-bats with an RBI and a run scored. Her RBI single in the first inning drove in a key early run, keeping the offense rolling and consistently creating problems for the Tennessee Tech defense.
The Eagles finished with 11 hits overall, leaving no doubt about their offensive firepower.
On the mound, Shaylin Stringer (2-1) was outstanding, firing five shutout innings while scattering just three hits and striking out two to earn the win.
Stringer and the Eagles' defense kept Tennessee Tech off the scoreboard for the duration, as the Golden Eagles managed only three hits in the contest.
The Eagles improved their record with the victory, showcasing both lineup depth and pitching strength as they move through their early season schedule.
The team's second scheduled game of the day – a matchup with Eastern Kentucky – was canceled due to weather and will not be rescheduled.
The Eagles will resume tournament play on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 11:30 a.m. vs. EKU and 2 p.m. vs. Rhode Island.
