
Eagles Deliver First Win At Troy, Down Trojans 80-69

Georgia Southern earns first victory at Trojan Arena in 12 tries with big third quarter blitz
TROY, Ala. - Georgia Southern women's basketball knocked off Troy, 80-69, in Sun Belt Conference action on Thursday evening, earning its first win over the Trojans in Troy in 12 tries.
The Eagles (14-5, 7-2 SBC) also halted a five-game slide overall to Troy (15-4, 6-2 SBC) and moved within a game of first place Arkansas State in the Sun Belt standings.
Troy jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first four and a half minutes of the game, but the Eagles cut the deficit to one, 16-15, at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles' Shanti Simmons then scored the final five points of the second quarter to tie the game at 36-all heading into halftime.
Destiny Garrett hit three three-pointers within the first three and a half minutes of the third quarter to put the Eagles up by four, then Georgia Southern blitzed the Trojans with a 16-0 run to end the frame and take a 20-point lead, 62-42, into the fourth. The Eagles outscored the Trojans 26-6 in the frame.
Troy came out in the fourth quarter with a full court press and opened up the period on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to nine, 64-55, but the Eagles started to find open passes and layups to weather the storm. A three from the Trojans made the deficit eight, 76-68, with 1:21 remaining, but Kishyah Anderson hit a jumper with the shot clock running down to push the lead back to 10, 78-68, with under a minute left to clinch the historic win.
Destiny Garrett led all scorers on the night with her season-high 29 points - 22 in the second half alone - while Simmons finished with 28 points and McKenna Eddings added 15 points. Zay Dyer and Rachel Leggett each tallied 15 points apiece on the night to lead the Trojans.
Eagle of the Game
Simmons went 10-for-17 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line en route to her career high 28-point total for the Eagles. She added six assists and six steals - both tying career highs - and also blocked a pair of shots in her first game against her former team. Simmons played one season at Troy in 2022-23.
