Georgia Southern takes on UNF to wrap up the weekend action in Jacksonville on Monday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Georgia Southern women's tennis team opened up the 2026 Spring season on Saturday, falling 4-0 to Florida Atlantic at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
The Eagles (0-1) were facing an Owls (1-1) squad that lost to host UNF by a 4-3 score on Friday. FAU ended the 2025 Spring season ranked No. 27 in the ITA Division I team rankings. Georgia Southern will wrap up the weekend by taking on UNF on Monday at 1 p.m.
FAU took the doubles point from the Eagles by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Owls then clinched the victory with straight set wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
"I think the level of excitement and enthusiasm was really high at the start of the match for the ladies," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Once we started playing points, we just needed to settle down and relax a little. This wasn't FAU's first match, and it was ours, so they had a little more of a relaxed demeanor on the court and it showed. We needed to eliminate a few more of the unforced errors and have the ability to absorb the ball better. Overall, I thought that we fought well and there is no doubt that this team has the talent and fight to be amazing and they will grow into that as time goes on.
"I'm particularly happy with how Mac, Evy and Nana fought in singles and how well Mac and Nana played doubles today," McCaffrey said. "We are looking forward to playing UNF on Monday and taking some of what we learned today into Mondays match."
