Georgia Southern opens up its home schedule on Friday against the College of Charleston
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern women's tennis wrapped up its opening weekend of action on Monday, falling to the University of North Florida by a 5-2 score in Jacksonville.
The Ospreys improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Georgia Southern falls to 0-2. The Eagles will next open up their home slate by hosting the College of Charleston on Friday, January 23, in a 1 p.m. match at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The doubles point saw the Ospreys claim a win at No. 2 doubles, while Evelyn Warkentin and Franzi Heinemann picked up a 6-4 win over Laurie Barendse and Nicole Alfaro Solis at No. 1 doubles. UNF then picked up the point with a win at No. 3 doubles.
North Florida picked up straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to clinch the match. Georgia Southern would earn a pair of points thanks to three-set wins by Angelina Mihajlovic at No. 3 singles and Evelyn Warkentin at No. 1 singles.
"Today was a really good match for the team," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "It's never easy to lose a close match like today but the amount of fight and grit some of the ladies showed really impressed me. Watching Evy run down every single ball just to try and extend her points, even when it looked as if she had zero chance of winning the points, only to eventually come away with a few was so incredibly exciting. And it was a really great job by Evy and Franzi with a very strong doubles win, along with Mac and Nana for playing really inspiring doubles.
"Also hats off course to Evy for winning 7-6 in the third and Angelina for winning 6-0 in her 3rd set after having a rough start to her singles match," Coach McCaffrey said. "There is no doubt the squad improved a bunch from Saturday to today. That's what we expect and we are all thankful that we get to play again on Friday against College of Charleston!"
