Dolphins tally two goals in each half; Georgia Southern returns to action Thursday at Western Carolina
STATESBORO - Jacksonville University women's soccer tallied a pair of goals in each half to notch a 4-1 win over host Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at Bo Pitts Field.
The Dolphins improved to 2-0 on the year with the victory, while Georgia Southern falls to 1-1. The Eagles return to action on Thursday, August 21, traveling to Western Carolina for a 6 p.m. contest against the Catamounts.
Jacksonville tallied its first goal in the 14th minute on a volley from Manuela Restrepo, assisted by Paula Herranz.
The Eagles tied things up in the 31st minute as senior Bri Conley drove down the left side and crossed to the top of the box, where freshman Paisley Cathey's strike curled inside the left post for her second goal in as many matches.
The Dolphins would retake the lead just four minutes later on a strike by Alicia Rey Perez and take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles were able to outshoot the Dolphins by a 9-6 margin, but Jacksonville scored a pair of goals late to clinch the victory.
"Today was a disappointing day for our team," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said. "We allowed Jacksonville to come in to our home field and dictate the way the game was played. We have to get off to a better start like we did in our opening match on Thursday against Samford. There were times that we had them under pressure, but ended up having nothing to show for it. Tough performance, but it will ultimately force us to correct some weaknesses that were exposed today."
The Eagles finished the match with a 15-13 edge in shots, and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Jacksonville goalkeeper Pia Bozic made five saves in net for the Dolphins, while Addison Daughtry had four saves in one half of action for the Eagles. Quinn Wilson made two saves in the second half. Georgia Southern was whistled for 15 fouls and two offsides, while Jacksonville was whistled for eight fouls and three offsides.
