Softball Secures Fourth Straight Series With 8-1 Win Over Coastal Carolina

Eagles sit atop the Sun Belt at 9-2

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern offense exploded scoring in five straight innings to roll past Coastal Carolina, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at Beautiful Eagle Field.

Georgia Southern (25-14, 9-2 SBC) continued its best start in Sun Belt conference play moving to 9-2 and secured its fourth straight series victory. The series marks the first time since 2021 that the Eagles have taken the series over the Chanticleers.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Kayla Christensen led off the bottom of the first with a walk and Emma Davis reached on an errant sacrifice bunt to put runners on the corners before Valerie Combs doubled to score the pair of runners. The Eagles now move to 12-1 when scoring in the first inning.

Coastal Carolina (28-11, 5-6 SBC) responded in the second on a two out RBI infield single but a groundout ended the threat. The Chanticleers would go on to leave seven runners on base and were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Madison Humber extended the lead in the second with her first collegiate RBI on a base hit to score pinch runner Brooke Kell. Two batters later, Emma Davis would drive the second run of the inning on an RBI groundout to second to make it 4-1 after two.

Madi Gillespie and Delanie Thames tallied RBI doubles in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to further extend the lead. Thames recorded her third hit of the game, a career high, driving in a pair of runs on a two-RBI single to make the final, 8-1.

Thames led the offense going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Additionally, five different Eagles recorded a hit in the contest.

Bailey Holland (6-6) secured the victory in the circle tossing five complete innings scattering eight hits and allowing one run. In relief, Morgan Kendrick tossed two complete innings not allowing a hit and picked up two strikeouts.
