STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern football team held its annual Blue-White Game, presented by Morris Bank, Southern Exchange, The Sack Company and Savannah/Hilton Head International Saturday at Allen E. Paulson Stadium as the squad wrapped up its spring practice session. Using a mixed scoring system where both sides of the ball could earn points, the offense topped the defense 48-31.
Freshman
Donal Dempsey got the Eagles on the board on the first drive with a 27-yard field goal before
JC French IV hit
Camden Brown for the first touchdown. A pair of big plays helped the offense widen its lead as
Tyler Budge connected with
Taylor Bradshaw on a long scoring pass before
Jamarian Samuel busted a long run up the middle for another score.
Dempsey hit a 33-yard field goal before the offense ended things with three touchdown passes, two from transfer
Turner Helton (one to Bradshaw and one to
Taeo Todd) and a long one from Budge to
Carmelo Mays.
The different units of offense put up 132 yards on the ground and nearly 500 yards through the air as French IV, Helton and Budge all threw for over 120 yards and each had at least one score with no turnovers.
Justin Meyers,
Demarcious Robinson and
Jacob Hammonds led the defense with six tackles apiece while
Kebba Secka had two of the eight "touch" sacks.
The Eagles will resume team practices in late July in earnest preparation for the opener at Fresno State on Aug. 30 in California.
