Eagles Blank CCU 4-0, Play For Sun Belt Title Tomorrow

Georgia Southern meets top-seed and No. 56-ranked Old Dominion on Sunday at 1

Box Score

ROME, Ga. - No. 2-seeded Georgia Southern will play for the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Championship after notching a 4-0 semifinal win over No. 6 seed Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.

The Eagles (18-6) will take on top-seed and No. 56-ranked Old Dominion in the championship match at 1 p.m. on Sunday, a rematch of last year's tournament championship. Old Dominion advanced to the final with a 4-2 win over No. 4 seed Troy on Saturday morning.

Georgia Southern earned the doubles point from the Chanticleers thanks to a 6-2 win by Pol del Castillo and Dimitris Paliouras at No. 2 doubles, and a fierce 7-6 (4) win by Matthew Mitchell and Pierre Mouesca at No. 3 doubles - a match in which the pair trailed 4-2 in the tiebreak before reeling off five consecutive points for the victory.

In singles, the Eagles claimed the first set in five of six singles matches. Aaron James Williams gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Juan Cruz Collardin at No. 2 singles, then Paliouras claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Christopher Norlin at No. 1 singles. Castillo then sent the Eagles into the final with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Curzio Manucci at No. 3 singles.

"I thought we were resilient," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said. "Coastal threw a lot at us in doubles; we easily could have won it, or we easily could have lost it. I thought our guys did a good job of resetting and not letting that be the high of the match. We established up front that we were ready to go."

"I expect a battle tomorrow," Coach Goodwin said about tomorrow's matchup with Old Dominion. "They're a great team, they've owned this conference since they've joined, but we're ready to go. We feel confident, and we know what we want to make the match about. We're excited to put it on the line tomorrow."
