STATESBORO - Georgia Southern swept the Sun Belt Conference men's tennis weekly awards for a second time this season, announced on Thursday by league officials. Freshman Willy Mirarchi was named the SBC Player of the Week, while Mirarchi and senior Matthew Mitchell were named the SBC Doubles Team of the Week.
Mirarchi went 2-0 in singles with a pair of straight-set wins on the week, helping the Eagles to two victories. He defeated North Alabama's Samu Dominguez, 6-2, 7-5, in Georgia Southern's 4-2 victory over the Lions on Wednesday. The Paderno Dugnano, Italy, native then beat Elon's Nikola Parichkov, 6-3, 6-2, on Friday in Georgia Southern's win over the Phoenix. Mirarchi was also leading No. 56 Old Dominion's Felix Obermair, 6-1, 6-6 (6-5) on Saturday when the match was completed.
This is the first weekly honor for Mirarchi and he is the first Georgia Southern freshman to earn a Sun Belt weekly honor since Pierre Mouesca on March 8, 2023.
Mirarchi then teamed with Mitchell to go 3-0 in doubles play on the week, including an incredible 7-6 (3) win over Elon's duo of Antinheimo and Ymer in which the pair trailed by a 5-0 score. The duo also picked up a 6-3 win over North Alabama's Brain and Dominguez and a 6-3 win over No. 56 Old Dominion's Moundir and Obermair. This is the first career weekly honor for Mitchell, the Vidalia, Ga, native who is the lone senior on the Eagles' squad this season.
Georgia Southern is next in action on Friday, April 3, traveling to South Alabama for a 3 p.m. Sun Belt contest against the Jaguars in Mobile, Ala.
