Softball Sweeps Georgia State for Third Straight Series Win

Eagles are now 7-2 in Sun Belt play

STATESBORO – Georgia Southern softball picked up a pair of wins, 8-3, and 3-2 (5), over Georgia State to sweep the series and secure its third straight series on Saturday at Beautiful Eagle Field. 

The Eagles picked up its first conference series sweep of the season and continued its best start to Sun Belt play with a 7-2 conference record. 

Game One (Georgia Southern 8, Georgia State 3)
Georgia Southern scored a run in four straight innings beginning in the second and tallied its second most hits on the season to secure its first victory of the afternoon.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the second when Madi Gillespie drove in Faith Barth on an RBI double to left center field. Georgia State would respond back in the top of the third with a pair of runs to take the lead, 2-1. 

Georgia Southern would respond in the bottom half of the inning by scoring four runs on three hits to regain the lead, 5-2. Emma Davis would push the Eagles back out in front on a two-RBI double to left field plating Humber and Christensen who reached on a walk and single, respectively. 

Valerie Combs continued the offense plating Davis on a RBI single before Payton Cushman tallied an RBI sacrifice fly for the Eagles' final run of the inning. 

The Panthers cut into the deficit in the fourth on an RBI single but the Eagles would once again answer in the bottom half of the frame as Davis tallied her second double of the game to score Christensen with two outs. 

Cushman and Gracie Bellard drove in the final two runs of the game for the Eagles on RBI singles to make the final, 8-3. 

Bailey Holland picked up her fifth win of the season tossing six complete innings allowing three runs on five hits and struck out five Panther batters. Morgan Kendrick threw an inning of relief picking up a strikeout. 

Five Eagles produced multi-hit performances highlighted by Faith Barth who tied her career high with three hits as she went 3-for-3 at the plate including two doubles, run scored, and a walk. Davis recorded a career high three runs batted in. 

Game Two (Georgia Southern 3, Georgia State 2) 
Georgia Southern struck first in the third when Barth tallied her third double of the day, a two out two-RBI double to right field to score Davis and Combs who reached via a fielder's choice and base hit, respectively. 

The Panthers evened the score in the fifth on a two-RBI triple but Maddie Johnson entered in relief to end the threat with a strikeout. The Eagles jumped back out in front in the bottom half of the inning as Combs hit the game winning RBI sacrifice fly to score Christensen. 

Due to darkness the game was called after five innings. 

Maddie Johnson earned her 11th win of the season tossing just 0.1 innings in relief. 

Five different Eagles tallied hits in the contest and Christensen extended her reached base streak to 23 games. 

Next Up 
Georgia Southern is set for midweek action against Georgia Tech on April 1 at Mewborn Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
