New Orleans, La. --- Georgia Southern left-handed pitcher
Jacob Phillips was awarded with the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honor, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon (March 25th).
In Phillip's two appearances of the week, he would secure wins in both a 5-4 win over Kennesaw State and a 5-1 victory over App State, his first wins of the season. Combined, the senior would throw for 8.2 innings and only allowed a singular run in that span. Phillips would only allow three combined hits and one walk, while striking out nine batters on the week. He would have one of his best outings in relief Sunday against App State, where he threw 4.2 innings of scoreless ball. On the afternoon, he would also only give up one hit while punching out a career-high six Mountaineers.
Although having a challenging start to the year against South Florida and Campbell, Phillips has bounced back in a big way. The senior has now allowed one or fewer hit in three of his last four appearances, and one run or less allowed in his last three outings. On the season, Phillips has a 3-1 record with a 7.32 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 19.2 innings of work.
Next, Phillips and the Eagles host the Ospreys of North Florida for a midweek bout tomorrow night at J.I. Clements Stadium (March 26th). First pitch is set for 6 PM on Wild West Wednesday in Statesboro.
