MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Georgia Southern women's tennis handed head coach Sean McCaffrey his 500th collegiate head coaching victory on Friday, defeating the College of Charleston by a 6-1 score at the Turner Tennis Center in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
The Eagles notched their fourth straight win, improving to 5-1 on the young season, while also notching a fifth straight win in the series against the Cougars, who fell to 1-2 on the year.
McCaffrey earns the milestone win in his 22nd season as a collegiate head coach. The milestone includes his wins as a men's and women's head coach and his career collegiate coaching record now stands at 500-280, a .641 winning percentage. His women's collegiate coaching record is 313-174 (.643) and his men's collegiate coaching record is 187-106 (.638).
Georgia Southern earned the doubles point by getting 6-2 wins from Juliette Nask and Evelyn Warkentin at No. 1 doubles, as well as Hannah Eifert and Franzi Heinemann at No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles and the Cougars then split the six first sets in singles. Georgia Southern was able to clinch the match with straight set wins from Nask at No. 2 singles, Amelie Rosadoro at No. 5 singles and Nanaka Kijima at No. 6 singles.
Mackenzie Leopold rallied from dropping the first set to notch a three-set wins at No. 4 singles, while Evelyn Warkentin earned a win at No. 1 singles by prevailing in a third-set 10-point tiebreak.
"I felt really positive after we came off the court in doubles, as it was some of the better doubles that we have played this year," McCaffrey said. "We looked really cohesive and our movement was really good. It looked like we were going to take all three of the doubles matches, so I was happy with that.
"I was extremely impressed with the resolve and the relentless attitude that the women displayed in singles," McCaffrey said. "We lost a few first sets, and being able to come back and take those second or third sets in the matches was great. And even credit to Lisen, where she lost her first set and was not very happy about it, but making her second set a real fight gave everyone else a little bit of a pump up. Amelie and Nanaka for taking care of their singles as quick as they did, and Juliette did a really good job at number two. Overall, it was a great day and I think we've got some good momentum. We're learning a lot as there's still some really good lessons to take into practice tomorrow, and then on Sunday with Florida."
