Eagles Stumble Against Bulls in Series Opener, 9-1

Statesboro, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (3-2, 0-0 SBC) fell to South Florida (3-2, 0-0 AAC) on a chilly Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium (February 21).
After Kade Grundy sat down the opening three batters to start the game, Georgia Southern would respond well by slapping two singles and a walk in their first three batters to load the bases with no one out. However, Corey Braun on the mound for the Bulls would mow down the Eagles' lineup striking out the next three batters to retire the side. Georgia Southern would eventually leave 11 runners stranded, including another bases loaded inning in the seventh. For Braun, he would retire five straight Eagles via the K and finish with seven of them in his six innings of work.
Two major innings were what gave the Bulls the runaway win, as their fourth inning saw four hits and walks to allow five runs to touch home. However, after both teams established control and started to settle, they struck gold four more times in the ninth off another four hit inning to give them better cushion. The lone run for the Eagles would come in the sixth as a Luke Odden leadoff walk and an eventual Sean Smith single put runners on the corners. The next at-bat, Smith successfully stole second and Odden caught their sleeping defense off guard to take home on the throw.
Josh Tate and Sean Smitrh continues putting together multi-hit games after each knocking two hits on the night. Jax Lewis shone in his first few innings of his five pitched, but lost some gas in the ninth, giving up a few runs. The Eagles are still looking for their first win in program history against the Bulls.
They will have their chance tomorrow at 2 PM where Jacob Phillips is set to make the start on the mound after his phenomenal performance exactly a week prior, while James Hill looks to bounce back after his starting loss last week for USF.
